PETALING JAYA: The Motorcycle Patrol Unit of the police, which was announced under the 2013 Budget, was officially launched last month by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The unit will start operations in selected areas in the Klang Valley.
The police will be spotting Kawasaki Ninja 250R bikes and will be on patrol duty in housing and business areas. Their presence will make patrolling efforts more effective to bring relief to members of the public.
The Prime Minister during the launch stressed that the government is committed to fighting crime of all layers and heed the people’s call for a safer country.
These are the main motivating areas that encouraged the introduction of the Motorcycle Patrol Unit, which is an Reducing Crime National Key Results Area (NKRA) initiative, under the recent Budget announcement.
Najib also added that, the allocation for the initiative can be increased even prior to the 2014 Budget announcement.
This will be done by increasing the current crime fighting allocation as it is a priority area for the government.
“I hope the public will give the unit a chance to do their job and prove their mettle.
“The last six months have been spent re-assessing the crime fighting initiatives to measure its effectiveness,” said Najib.
The introduction of the unit is crucial especially to address the issue of house break-ins.
“It will have a positive impact for the people and also assist in crime prevention efforts.
“This will be possible through the flexible nature of the motorcycle as a patrol vehicle in arriving at crime scenes and to chase criminals,” he said.
The unit has started with a total of 560 units of motorcycles out of the 1000 units planned for the initiative. The initial patrol units will be implemented in four states Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor before the rest of the units are distributed to other states.
The patrol will function on a buddy system with two officers in each patrol team.
Three shifts are planned for 24 hours at residential neighbourhoods, business areas, recreational parks, industrial areas and schools.
The motorbikes will complement the police’s regular car patrol units and the mobile beat bases, Ops Payung.
A team of 1,000 officers will be assigned for patrol duty under the NKRA contingent.
The force will be divided into 50 supervising officers and 950 patrol personnel.
