Stalled Rumah Dayak project moving, with same contractor

THEN: The condition of the project in January 2012, in ridicule when it was stalled.
KUCHING: The stalled Rumah Dayah project is being continued by the same contractor, revealed Sarawak Dayak National Union president Tan Sri William Mawan yesterday.
The project was delayed since the laying of its foundation stone in 1997; the reasons given being economic, including the Asian financial crisis that year.
Mawan said SDNU and the developer have agreed to complete the complex which includes a tower and shopping lots, for the sake of both parties and its significance to the Dayak community.
“The project will be a focal point for people to gather and meet apart from it being a venue to conserve and promote Dayak culture and tradition,” said the state senior minister and social development minister.
“SDNU hopes the project will become a reality even though it takes a long time to materialise,” said Mawan.
He hoped public perception of SDNU will change when the project is completed.
At its triennial general meeting (AGM) in April 2012, Mawan was elected SDNU president, and he assured that Rumah Dayak will be completed slowly but surely.
A quick check on the project yesterday found a section of Rumah Dayak looking ready for sale or to be rented out to businesses.
The Rumah Dayak project was said to be a unity symbol of the Dayaks but became a subject of public ridicule by some when its development stalled.
According to their development agreement, the developer has an 80 percent share in the project while SDNU has 20 per cent.
